Prototyping with Sean Webber – The ‘Mindset’

Do you remember the film Field of Dreams and the line  – “Build it and they will come.”? Well my good spirited housemate said this soon after I had finished putting together my home workshop.

Its particularly great when a truly novel and inspiring new design comes ones way….

I was recently contacted by Sean Webber, a Neuroscientist and Product Designer who has conceived the ‘Mindset’ – A ‘Portable, battery powered, brain stimulation headset. The unique design provides exceptional versatility to enable users to stimulate a host of different sites across the head for many different effects.’

‘backed up with evidence from published and peer reviewed scientific research…the MINDset uses transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a technology that has been used by researchers and scientists for decades.’

‘Stimulation has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain area, increasing concentrations of neurotransmitters and achieve long lasting increases in activity. ‘

‘This additional activity means improvements to certain cognitive functions. If you stimulate an area associated with concentration, you become less distracted. Likewise if you stimulate an area associated with memory, you are better able to learn and recall new information. ‘

Sean contacted me on a recommendation and visited my new workshop CAD files in hand. Together we put his prototype together, with drills, saws and the 3D  printer fervently fabricating the smaller complex components all on the fly.  It was great fun, and reinforced the great practical uses of having a 3D printer right there to hand when prototyping.

Printing a part, checking it, deciding it could work that little bit better with this tweak and that, innovating other parts using different materials pulling from all sorts of odd’s and ends, all to make a prototype come together. Its what innovation and design is all about!

Over and afternoon, a bunch of 3D prints, much cutting of materials, drilling, bolting and much epoxy, a prototype of the Mindset was coming together. Ear protectors where canabalised and various plastic and metal components where used to create the enclosure for the latter to be added electrical components of the headset (all details of the electronics are protected from common knowledge at this time!) At a latter date further modifications will be added to allow for effective plastic injection moulding upon manufacture.

I would go into further details about this fantastic invention but I think no one can demonstrate this better than Sean himself. Sean now has a indiegogo crowdfunding campaign afoot to raise the capital the bring his design to market. Go see this link bellow right now and watch the video and be the first among humanity to have your brain stimulated to inspired your own unique levels of genius!

Do you need workshop space to put your own designs together, consultancy on the fly, CAD development, and on hand 3D printing? I can help…
